A cinematic record of the hand-powered calculating machine—a “Difference Engine”—built by George and Edvard Scheutz in Sweden, in 1853. The featured machine, one of two built, was based on the plans for the Difference Engine designed by Charles Babbage. The Scheutz Machine, unlike the Babbage engine, actually performed calculations. The Scheutz is one of the most important milestones in the history of calculating and computing.
