3473 Sofa

DATE - 1964

The 3473 Sofa, referred to in some catalogs as the “Three-Passenger Sofa,” had some genuinely innovative features—like an aluminum frame whose cross-section graduated from round to elliptical. Its overall form and construction alluded both to the Eames Sofa Compact and the Eames Executive Chair.

Eames 3473 Sofa

The first Eames sofa, the Sofa Compact, struck a chord because it was like a post-war hot rod: its structure exposed and straightforward, its demeanor youthful and mobile. The upholstered seat and back cushions are deeper and softer, providing even more comfort. Ten years later they released the Eames 3473 Sofa.

Its high back and angled seat, supported by solid cast aluminum legs, is similar in shape to the Sofa Compact. The seat and back were each constructed out of a single piece of plywood with an angle molded into the back section. The back and seat pads were made of 3-inch-thick urethane foam, covered by a 1-inch layer of dacron. The amount of detailing on the design ultimately made it too expensive to produce; Herman Miller manufactured this Eames sofa until 1973.
